Karmak prepares for Integrity transition to protect your investment with
HP
Continued from What's new at
Karmak?
Although HP will no longer accept orders for new AlphaServer systems after October 27,
2006, AlphaServers running the OpenVMS operating system will be supported
for at least 5 years after that date, or through the year 2011. In addition, HP
will provide 24 months notice before discontinuing support for the platform, so
there is a strong probability that support will be provided for at least 7
years, or through the year 2013. This should not be cause for immediate concern
for AlphaServer customers, however, because even though the VAX platform (which
was the only hardware platform to support OpenVMS before AlphaServers were
introduced) has technically been discontinued for several years, it is still
supported by OpenVMS today—in fact, many Karmak customers are still successfully
using their VAX systems.
Some interesting and important facts to keep in mind are:
- HP Integrity servers protect your investment because they are able to run the
Microsoft Windows operating system, allowing you to continue using the server
after Karmak completes our transition to a Windows-based system.
- As was the case
with Karmak's Legend business system, the vast majority of Alpha-based OpenVMS
applications are able to run on Integrity servers simply by recompiling,
relinking, and testing them.
- HP
offers trade-in when upgrading from AlphaServer to Integrity. Your existing
AlphaServer OpenVMS software license will transfer to Integrity at no charge
(for "equivalent product" with support contract).
- Studies show that OpenVMS
running on Integrity servers achieve industry-leading lows in Total Cost of
Ownership (TCO).
- Karmak's strategy of rolling out new modules based on Microsoft
Windows helps extend the life of your AlphaServer or Integrity server running
OpenVMS because as each new Windows-based module is released, the load on the
OpenVMS server is reduced.
- OpenVMS is still alive and kicking, with over 300,000
systems running OpenVMS, and over 10 million users. These systems include
businesses that require security and reliable performance, such as hospitals,
large financial institutions, stock exchanges, telephone companies, insurance
companies, government and military installations.
The following information from
a recent presentation prepared by HP on OpenVMS gives you an idea of just how
prevalent and stable the product still is:
- #1 rated in Healthcare
- 30% of mobile phones billed in the world
- 50% of the
world's SMS transactions
- 50% of the world's top Exchanges
- 66% of funds transfers
- Dominant presence in Lottery systems
- Leading supplier to Semiconductor
manufacturers worldwide
