  Training: Karmak Legend® - INFO 5® - ProfitMaker®

Legend
The new Legend Training Center schedule includes Regional Training in the Raleigh-Durham, N.C. area.  In addition, the Training Center at Karmak Headquarters in Carlinville, Ill. has scheduled workshops in systems and service mangement, plus a new class in physical inventory, inventory reconciliation and an introduction to ProfitMaster Bar Code Receiving. System software upgrades can be painless

Let's face it; you probably don't like the thought of upgrading your business system to the latest version of software. However, you know it has to be done in order to take advantage of new programs and enhancements that will keep you at an advantage over your competition. Now, Karmak is providing a service to make it easier to get current on your system software.

Legend upgrades
The latest version of the Legend business system, Version 5.7-1, requires an operating system of OpenVMS of 7.3 or higher. Therefore, if your operating system version is lower than 7.3, you will receive four additional CDs when you receive your Legend 5.7-1 CD; OpenVMS 7.3, Firmware 5.3, Firmware 5.9, and Patches.

After receiving your upgrade CD(s), please call Karmak's Systems Support group at 1-888-671-6010, or e-mail We'll put you on our calendar so we're aware when you plan to install the upgrade(s). Or, schedule a date for Karmak to perform the upgrade(s) for you.

INFO 5 upgrades
The latest version of the INFO 5 business system, Release 7.1A, requires an operating system of OS/400 of V4R5 or higher. After receiving your upgrade CD(s), please call Karmak's Applications Support group at 1-800-865-8991, or e-mail . We'll put you on our calendar so we're aware when you plan to install the upgrade(s). Or, schedule a date for Karmak to perform the upgrade(s) for you.

When we have the date of your upgrade, Karmak can assign a representative specifically to your company to provide the best level of support. If you are unsure if you want to perform the upgrade on your own, call us and we will set up a time to review the instructions and answer any questions. If you still don't feel comfortable, Karmak will schedule a date and perform the upgrade(s) for you -- either during or after business hours.

If you schedule your upgrade(s) during Karmak's normal business hours, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Time, we will assist or perform the upgrade(s) for you at no charge. You may contract Karmak to perform the upgrade(s) after hours for a fee. This applies to Legend, INFO 5, and operating system upgrades. Note that a representative from your company must be onsite to enter commands.

Our goal is for all of your Karmak upgrades to be as painless as possible, and we are confident that our new procedures will accomplish just that. Please call us with questions at any time.

To take full advantage of new bar coding capabilities, you are advised to contact your suppliers’ representatives to request their bar code cross files before installing ProfitMaster Bar Code Receiving. This will ensure accurate crosses from scanned part labels to the suppliers’ part numbers in your Karmak system. Karmak 2003 Dealers' Conference a success
Attendance at the 14th annual Karmak Dealers' Conference, held October 8-10, 2003, at the Sheraton St. Louis City Center, increased dramatically this year. Customers had many opportunities to network with their peers, Karmak staff and suppliers.

The Wednesday morning conference kick-off was highlighted with OEM breakouts, including International, PACCAR, Volvo/Mack, and Caterpillar. The kick-off speaker, Frank Halbert, Karmak's Western Area Manager, discussed, "Who's in Charge?" In his keynote, Halbert addressed the importance of the customer, and how everyone in your organization impacts the customer and his loyalty.


The Karmak 2003 Dealers' Conference drew a crowd with exciting new sessions and expanded accommodations.

Hot tips

Legend tip - See profitability on repair orders

Service managers will benefit from this feature, available with Legend 5.6 and higher, which lets authorized users quickly see profit margins by operation on repair orders.

When Repair Order Review/Invoice (RS130F) Central Parameter line 34 is set to Y, the program shows "Profitability by Operation" at the end of the printed repair order review.

The Profitability by Operation section shows the following information:

  • Sale--the price for each operation (parts and labor) before sales tax
  • Margin--profit margin dollars, which is price less cost
  • Hours--the actual hours worked if Central Parameter line 26 is set to N, billed hours if set to Y
  • Average--the average profit margin dollars per hour worked, which is margin dollars divided by hours worked
  • Percent--the profit margin percentage, which is margin dollars divided by sale dollar
  • Total--the total of each column for the entire repair order

INFO 5 tip - Checking the DOC report

Karmak recommends that the Daily Operating Control (DOC) report for Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable be checked EVERY DAY! This will eliminate a lot of trouble later. The DOC report is set up in Menu AGL03, Option 14 Define Daily Operating Control for A/R and A/P in each library that has its own General Ledger. It is printed as part of the End-of-Day process. The totals for A/R and A/P need to be compared. If they do not match, then they are out of balance. If these reports are checked daily and Applications Support is called when they are out of balance, it is easer to find the cause and correct the error. Since A/R can only be checked in the current and prior month, it must be dealt with as soon as possible. Correcting an out of balance that is older than current or prior month requires file restorations and can be very time consuming and costly. As in A/R, it is better that we know A/P is out of balance as soon as possible since the cause is much harder to find as time passes.
