Karmak, Inc. is celebrating its 25th year of providing business management software systems to heavy duty truck parts distributors, dealers, manufacturers, service shops, lease/rental facilities, and fleets.

Incorporated on December 31, 1981, Karmak began in response to the need for useful software to handle the specific needs of the heavy duty trucking arena. Schien Body and Equipment employees Richard Schien and Alan Weller collaborated to design and build a comprehensive software system from the ground up. Richard soon formed Karmak and began marketing a complete computer system to heavy duty businesses from their Carlinville, Ill. location. Continued>

Track support incidents online with Karmak Help Desk Live

Help Desk Live is a new tool available to Karmak business system users that allows access to your open and recently closed support incidents over the Internet. This new service will improve the flow of information regarding the status of your incidents at no additional charge. Help Desk Live is available to authorized contacts within your company, and allows viewing but not changing the information displayed.

To request your Help Desk Live user name and password, Legend users may contact Joyce Donaldson at  or 800-252-7625; INFO 5 clients may contact Heather Gardner at  or 800-865-8991. Once you receive your login information, our Customer Support group will contact you with additional information on using Help Desk Live.

Legend system available for HP Integrity servers

The Legend business system is now available for HP Integrity servers running the OpenVMS operating system. The new software release allows customers to easily upgrade from HP AlphaServers or VAX servers as well as take advantage of the high performance of the HP Integrity family of servers.

Mobile Repair Order Entry module coming soon

"With the Mobile Repair program, the guys can finish a job, jump in their truck and type up their work orders immediately. Once they are back in the office, they can transfer the work orders over to Legend and make any changes they need, print them off, etc. Technicians can be more efficient and the non-billable labor costs go down."

Mobile Repair Order Entry is a new application that allows service personnel to easily open a repair order from any location via a portable PC. Since its debut at the October 2006 Karmak user conference, Mobile Repair Order Entry has received very positive responses and is currently in beta testing for Legend systems. Here are a few of the features designed to make it easier to provide emergency roadside repairs, maintenance at fleet locations, and any service performed off-site.

New Legend KOLD features improved folder options

Now it's easier to organize, archive, and retrieve your Karmak reports with the latest release of Legend KOLD (Karmak OnLine Documents). The new release contains enhancements that allow you to designate reports to be placed in specific sub-folders when they are moved to KOLD. Multiple sub-folders are supported—not just one Private folder as in previous versions. Folders can be named Parts, Service, Accounting, or practically any name you choose. Multiple levels of sub-folders are also supported, such as Parts.Purchasing or Accounting.MonthEnd. In addition, each sub-folder can be password protected if desired. Legend KOLD Version 1.1 is available to users of Legend V5.8 or higher.

With this release, we have also added support for .LST and .PDF files that are manually copied into the KOLD$DAILY: directory. They will be placed into KOLD under the date the file was created. Freightliner Parts Mission Critical available for Legend dealers

A new report option is available to help Freightliner dealers track and stock parts that are essential to the service department. Parts Mission Critical allows Freightliner to collect information from your Legend system regarding vehicles serviced in the past six months by your service department. Freightliner uses this information to alert you to those "mission critical” parts for better inventory control and service department management. Electronic Price File Download available for INFO 5

The Electronic Price File Download module is now available for INFO 5 customers. It has successfully undergone our testing process at selected beta sites and is now in general release.

Electronic Price File Download eliminates the need for Karmak to send you vendor price updates on CD. With this module you can download your vendors’ price updates directly from Karmak’s Central Price Update Server. This will help to ensure you have the most current pricing for your parts, potentially saving your company money. Not only will you be able to download your price updates immediately after they have been processed by Karmak, but you will also eliminate shipping charges and media fees.

When the price updates are received from the vendor, they are compressed and placed on the Price Update Server to be downloaded by INFO 5 clients via FTP. Download requests can be made for individual price files or for all price files. Users can be notified of the price update either via Internet email user messages and/or break messages on the iSeries.

This module requires INFO 5 Version 7.2 plus the latest Post 7.2 Update Cumulative PTF. For more information, including pricing, feel free to contact Kim Scott at 800-865-8991, or at .

Parts Inventory Aging Report available for INFO 5 users

A customized Parts Inventory Aging report is now available for INFO 5 users. This report, which is generated from multiple queries and then run at End of Day, ages parts by Months with No Demand and then separates them into the following groups: Rebuilt, Non-OEM, and OEM.

The report can also be accessed by clients who are using KOLD (Karmak OnLine Documents).

Karmak is providing this report for $175, or $18 per month, which includes setup and training in a Webinar session.

ProfitMaster added to Legend user documentation

The latest version of the Legend documentation manual, DocWizard Version 5.9-1, includes new and updated information on ProfitMaster modules, as well as the complete Legend system. Look for the ProfitMaster section in the table of contents for documentation on Internet Parts Sales (IPS), Pocket PC—Bar Code Receiving and Cycle Counting, Real-time Performance Monitor (RPM), and Sales Management for the Legend system. Also included are print-friendly versions of the online Help files for ProfitMaster Sales Management Versions 1.5 and 1.4.1, and RPM.

Rick Salvador rejoined Karmak's Springfield office on December 18, 2006, in his former position as the Manager of INFO 5 Customer Services. Rick is responsible for INFO 5 Applications and Systems Support, Installations, and Training. Rick was with Karmak for 10 years before his short sabbatical.
