Distributors' Conference

continued from What's new at Karmak?

As always, it was a pleasure to see Joan Wise from E&R Trailer, who made her 12th consecutive appearance. Michael Kurjata from Pacific Truck and Trailer was there for his seventh event. And we can always depend on seeing representatives from Keller Truck Parts (Brian Keller making his first appearance, although this is the 12th conference for the company); Springfield Brake's Larry Roberts was there for his ninth year; and UAP's Dominic Di Bacco, Alain Mineault, and Daniel Trottier kept some Karmak staffers in tears of laughter over lunch. And then there's Sikes Fleet Service's David Green and Ray Hilton, who were there for their fourth conference, even though their company has been on the Legend system for only three years.

Some of the more popular sessions included Jim Vanderpoel's class on using cross references, substitutions, and supersessions; Russ Bishop presented sessions on LAN/WAN and Internet/VPN; Brian Habbe's SysCom Did You Know? session was a hit, as was Marcus Nicholson's System Maintenance class.

Bob Bremer and Missy Clardy had fun tag-teaming the Legend Did You Know? class. Bells were distributed throughout the room and, when a customer learned something new about their Legend system, he or she was encouraged to ring the bell. Those guys from UAP spent a lot of time dinging that bell!

Bill Wade of Wade & Partners, a marketing consultant specializing in the heavy-duty industry, discussed how a company can move from good to great. With a presentation based on Jim Collins' book, From Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don't, Bill identified ways companies could make the leap.

Our road map came in handy at the Technology Update on Thursday morningwe discussed where we had been, where we are, and where we're going. Appropriately, the update was finished with J. Richard Schien's presentation on Effective Succession Planning, making your business ready for the future.

PowerPoint presentations of the Technology Update, J. Richard Schien's Succession Planning presentation, and Bill Wade's keynote presentation are available on Karmak's Customer Confidential website. If you don't have a password for Customer Confidential, please contact Sandy Trump at or 800-622-6311, ext. 2610.

On Thursday night at the St. Louis Blues hockey game, James Nydam from Spring Rebuilders of Worcester, Mass., won a pair of Blues tickets for a game the following week (good seats too!). James graciously gave them to the stranger sitting next to him who was decked out in his Blues garb. Nice guy! Incidentally, the Blues tied the Edmonton Oilers that night.

Raffle winners at the conference were Daniel Trottier of UAP who won a $250 Karmak Customer Services Certificate; David Green from Sikes Fleet Service also won a $250 Karmak Customer Services Certificate; Dominic Di Bacco from UAP went home with a $500 Karmak Customer Services Certificate; Sandy Eaton of Eaton Detroit Spring won a St. Louis Blues-themed gift basket (to take back to Red Wings country!) donated by Intermec; and Brian Keller of Keller Truck Parts was the winner of a Lexmark printer that was donated by Inland.

We enjoyed spending time with each and every one of you, and can't wait to see you again next year.
