First, Russ and his partner, Dr. Tom Jamieson of Lansing, Michigan, won the Senior Division of the Kircher Cup matches in a six-hole sudden death playoff. The Kircher Cup is a two-man team event over three rounds. It draws good players from all over the country. Their score was 66-64-68.
Later that same week, Russ won the Michigan Senior Amateur golf tournament for the third time in five years. His winning score was 151 in windy conditions.
Russ scored 72 in the qualifying round for the U.S. Senior Amateur, tying for second. There were 69 players at the qualifier contesting for four spots in the national tournament. The U.S. Senior Amateur champion is determined at match play. The 156 players who have qualified for the tournament at the local level play 36 holes of stroke play in the national tournament. The low 64 scorers after 36 holes then go into single elimination matches. Russ was in a sudden death playoff for the final four spots in match play, but he was eliminated on the second extra hole.
Congratulations, Russ!
