Bytware's MessengerPlus™ is a fully integrated AS/400 paging software that monitors the system during and after work hours, and pages support staff when problems occur. It immediately pages its way through a defined list of attendants until the message is answered.  A "scheduled paging" function also lets the program determine automatically which pager to contact based on the time of day.

Ideal for 24x7 systems management, MessengerPlus combines monitoring of messages (QSYSOPR) with active jobs (WRKACTJOB), job queues (WRKJOBQ), output queues (WRKOUTQ), communications to branches (WRKCFGSTS), restricted state functions, and more.  MessengerPlus performs pre-defined actions to automate response to recurring events and can be configured to send replies, run commands, send pager/e-mail messages, and copy events to other users.

Benefits

  • Reduce the high costs of downtime. You specify what is monitored.
  • Improve operations productivity and system management.  Determine the frequency of recurring problems by displaying the number of times an event has occurred over a period of time, such as the number of power outages, or a user signing on after hours or accessing unauthorized areas of the system.
  • Automatically route messages to the appropriate people.
  • Be paged automatically about power failures and other critical events.
  • Be paged if backups or other critical jobs do not start and/or complete on time.

Pager/notification device types we've tested

  • Alphanumeric pagers (one-way)
  • Numeric pagers
  • E-mail

Can also support

  • Alphanumeric pagers (two-way)
  • Two-way pagers

Obtaining pagers

You may obtain pagers from a paging company listed in the yellow pages of your local telephone book under "Pagers."

MessengerPlus system requirements

Prior to installing MessengerPlus, you will want to verify that you meet the following requirements:

  • IBM AS/400 running OS/400 V3R2/V3R7 or greater
  • Approximately 40MB of DASD to install
  • Available V.24 communications port for paging. (A V.35 asynchronous controller will not work).

If you are using the IBM 7852-400 Options modem, MessengerPlus can automatically share the modem with synchronous applications such as Service Director, ECS, and remote dial-in access.  You do not have to manually switch the modem between uses.

Most paging companies use a 300 or 1200 bps modem. The modem speed is determined by your paging company.  If you are planning to purchase a modem, a 300 or 122bps modem is sufficient.  Many synchronous modems, such as the IBM 5853 and 7855-10 for ECS, can be configured to operate in asynchronous modes.
